Scientists Find “Liberal Gene”

Oh, isn’t this interesting?

Researchers have determined that genetics could matter when it comes to some adults’ political leanings.

According to scientists at UC San Diego and Harvard University, “ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4.” That and how many friends you had during high school.

The study was led by UCSD’s James Fowler and focused on 2,000 subjects from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Scientists matched the subjects’ genetic information with “maps” of their social networks. According to researchers, they determined that people “with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults.” However, the, subjects were only more likely to have leanings to the left if they were also socially active during adolescence.

“It is the crucial interaction of two factors — the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence — that is associated with being more liberal,” according to the study.

So, there is a genetic predisposition to being liberal. Which is apparently activated by having a lot of friends during adolescence. I wonder how this will be spun.
Andrew Thomas at the American Thinker goes the predictable route and asks if a cure can be developed:
Can you foresee a future where people entering polling places are hit in the face with a dose of “sanity spray” prior to voting?  I’m certain that a vaccine can soon be developed to insure that our children lead healthy and happy lives, free from illogic, confusion, anger, hypocrisy, and projection.

Imagine a world without “victimized” classes, without special interest organizations having the words “green” or “justice” in their titles, with no demands for entitlements and manufactured “rights”, and where no one thinks we can borrow our way out of debt.

Oh, yes, very clever and funny and all that. Unfortunately, Thomas ignores the Leftist love affair with eugenics. Which is more likely, that someone will develop a “cure,” or that selective breeding programs will be enacted to weed out members of the population who lack this gene?
And I’m sure that some pop psychologist out there will try to convince everyone that this proves that conservatives don’t have real friends as kids and so they’re trying to compensate. Perhaps it really indicates that liberals have a genetic predisposition to value being accepted by others over developing solid relationships. Or that liberals are more easily influenced by peer pressure. Put more simply, is the dearth of adolescent friends a cause, or an effect?
Seriously, though, I have to wonder what else this gene is connected to. Does it also indicate a willingness to avoid personal responsibility and consequences? Or a desire to be accepted by part of a group? Perhaps the lack of this gene indicates a tendency toward individualism. Or could this gene even be related to narcissism?
Thanks, Wikipedia:
It is linked to many neurological and psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, Parkinsons disease, bipolar disorder, addictive behaviors including sex addiction, and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating.
So while liberals may try to hype up the novelty-seeking aspect of the gene by portraying themselves as more “open-minded” because of this discovery — providing more fuel for the notion Leftists seem to hold that they are superior to everyone else — let’s look at what this gene is actually an indicator of: a lack of impulse control. Is it any wonder that people who have this gene dominant are more likely to affiliate with the political Left?
