Obama believes that the state is the originator of all “rights.” He believes that it’s perfectly valid for him to get together with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and declare that free health care is a “right.” But rights don’t work that way. The danger of this statist view is that, what the state giveth, it can taketh away. A state that can create “rights” out of thin air can erase them just as easily. Think you have a right to self defense? Not if Obama and the gun haters get their way. Think you have a right to your property? Not when the redistributionists decide that it’s unfair for you to have more while others have less. This is why Obama refuses to acknowledge the origins of our rights, and why his deliberate ignorance is so dangerous.
And that, in a nutshell, is the core of the Leftist political position, and how it fundamentally differs from a conservative/libertarian position.
A conservative position holds that our rights are inalienable. We have them by the nature of existing. Whatever Creator you choose to believe in, be it multiple, singular, male, female, or simply a force or aspect of Nature or its Laws, that Creator has endowed you with your rights. If you exist, you have them, and it is a defiance of Nature to deny you those rights.
This is the position that underlies the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, and hence, our entire legal system.
The Leftist view differ from this. According to the Left, your rights come not by virtue of your existence, but because the government chose to give them to you. Which means, simply, that the government has the authority to take them away. Because, presumably, the government knows best, as it is run by people who are smarter and better than you, i.e. the Leftist Aristocracy. And because They Know Best, they can determine what freedoms you deserve and which ones just aren’t appropriate for you.
Obama omits references to the creator because he doesn’t believe that the Creator gives you your rights. He believes that He does.
